Lake Matheson is an artist’s and photographer’s dream. The lake’s mirror-like reflecting properties are due to the dark brown colour of the water, which isn’t dirty, but organic matter from the forest. This view is probably one of the most artistically reproduced images on New Zealand, appearing on chocolate boxes, postage stamps, calendars and jig-saw puzzles.
