The Kai Iwi Lakes, also known as Taharoa Domain, were formed over 1.8 million years ago from sand dunes blocking the flow of freshwater, creating pristine dune lakes. They’re famous for their crystal-clear waters, filtered naturally through the surrounding sand dunes. This makes them some of the clearest lakes in New Zealand. Unlike glacial lakes, the Kai Iwi Lakes are warm in summer, making them a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
