Blue Lake in Nelson Lakes National Park is recognized as having the clearest natural fresh water in the world, with visibility of up to 80 meters—comparable to distilled water. Probably why the it holds deep spiritual significance to Maori in the region, and the icy cold water was historically used for cleansing the bones of deceased chiefs. If you can handle the rugged terrain of the hike, you’ll be well-rewarded when you get there! If you can’t, buy the print instead.
